In Which Sara is a Freaking Idiot

So for those of you (all 4 of you, I believe) who are not Orthodox, I will preface this post by saying that today is a Fast Day.

As in, we eat nothing, from sunup to sundown. Just adults, not kids, no worries.

No, I cannot explain to you why not eating or drinking (yes, it's in italics. It's important-you'll see why in a moment) makes you remember the siege of Jerusalem a bunch of centuries ago. But it does, so I fast. Go with it.

Soooo.....many of you know that I am kinda...cheap. I don't like spending money if I don't have to. Hence, I brew my own coffee at home. It irks me to pay Dunkin Donuts (I hate Starbucks coffee-it's waaay to strong for me)$2 to serve me literally the exact same coffee I can brew at home for like $.02. Plus my coffeemaker has a timer, so I can wake up to the nirvana-inducing smell of the blessed coffee wafting up my stairs. Mmmmmm......

OK. So this morning, my coffeemaker was not set. Why? Because it's a fast day, silly.

I dropped the kids off at school, and was driving to the highway to go to my internet surfing blog writing desk work, and I saw it. The Dunkin Donuts. And I had clipped a $.99 latte coupon on Sunday. And I am cheap. And it was soooo cold. And I am also evidently, very very forgetful.

It took some effort-I had to turn left across a busy street. And turn off my car. And dig up the coupon from my enormous purse that is so big that one of my children could hide in it. And walk inside. And order it.

But when did I remember that it is a fast day and I cannot drink my latte? As I was literally walking out the door from Dunkin Donuts, savoring the happy smell of my skim latte, no sugar please.

RIP, dear, dear cheap latte.

I seem to be suffering from some bad timing karma recently.

oh, what a sad, sad story. I love those little lattes.

I also always forget during the fast day. I'll walk into the kitchen and say to myself, "Man, im hungry. What should i eat?"
And then i realize, OH, there's a REASON that im hungry. genius.

i do understand about the fast day thing...and also about the coupon thing...but, not being a cofee person, i have to wonder - can a latte not be resurected in the microwave after the fast?

So funny-I was wondering the same thing about the microwave! (Also not a coffee drinker).

That really stinks. I'm not Jewish, and I don't like coffee, but I can still feel your pain. I'll equate it to having a purse full of Swedish Fish on Good Friday. :)

I hope you indulge on one tomorrow.

Kelly-
you literally made me LOL!
I'm going to nuke that sucker at 5:20.

Will update then.

Dude. Go chabad. Or Sefardi. Or something -- whatever. Get the mom heter. The one that says moms don't do minor fast days. I got that heter years ago. And it holds even when you're not nursing or knocked up.

Well, not all of us "hold" by the easy-off heter. I would microwave it! But to remember with it under your Nose! LOL!!!
I never forget about food, but I do think often, oh, Gee I'm thirsty, want a ____ and then remember....

I always end the fast with soup.

Oh Sara I feel your pain. I am still in TX and I haven't had a homemade hot meal in a week- (except Shabbos) Then we went to the grocery store to pick up food to break the fast on tonight and I almost lost it- the smell of cooking chickens and everything. I miss my house and my bed and my homemade food!

Did you really not drink it?? I can't say I would have had the will power to have done the same. Very impressed. Enjoy your break the fast!!

(we were done at 5:09; we had fresh split pea soup and bagels)

I did not want to comment earlier while the fast was going on...because while I was reading this post, I was drinking my homemade vienna flavor coffee concoction. (Due to the fact I am "knocked up" as WriterGrrl puts it, and baby gets what baby wants) But out of sympathy - I did swallow a gulp down the wrong tube and some came out my nose. Now go drink your latte.

NOF (non-orthodox friend) #2 checking in....since I live for DD, I can feel your pain. Ouch. FYI, if you recharge your DD card, you can get a $2 buck bonus, so there's your 99 cents back.....

OK ladies...
I actually drank 3 cups from the coffeemaker that Benjie set to turn on at 4:58...call me at 2 am I'll still be up!
I'm drkinging my little latte in the morning.
And Peta (agent 99)-explain what you're talking about the dd card...

DD has prepay cards. I use one for Shul. I put money on the card and then use the card to pay for my DD purchases. I didn't know about the $2 refill bonus. That's good to know. I am adding to my card every month.

DESJ and Company said...

but what's the benefit of the prepaid card? besides for the $2 load up bonus?

do you get better prices?

Sounds like me when I was dating Tamar. "Wow, I had the best Spanish omelet on the Continental flight this morning."
