You asked me about the painted brick. I too, had some dog fugly brick when we bought this 1970's home. Before you paint, you need to prime it with a special primer for brick called concrete and block filler. It is thick and lumpy and gross, but necessary. It helps prevent the paint from peeling right off. then I chose a shade one color lighter than the adjoining room and went to town. The best thing I've ever done. Now if I could only scrounge up some cash to hire someone to paint the outside of my fugly brick house, we'd be in business.
